If they're too tight initially, wet them while wearing them for faster stretching. Once they fit comfortably, avoid getting them wet to prevent further stretching. You can wash them in the washing machine at 40° Celsius when needed. Whenever they get wet, air-dry them away from direct sunlight. Keep the soles in good condition by using beeswax or Dubbin. We also sell natural beeswax to support your Earth Sole here . If the waxed thread wears through, a drop of one-second glue will prevent unraveling. At a festival on a rainy day in South Africa, Anouk was handed a piece of recycled leather by a friend. Inspired by the concept of grounding, the idea for a barefoot shoe in its simplest form was born — a natural, handmade shoe with a leather sole, through which you would stay connected to the ground. It started with just a shoe for herself, but the shoes stood out Anouk realized many others were interested in a truly natural barefoot shoe like hers. Though she had no experience with leather or shoe-making, her passion for creation and love for helping others with her natural shoes led her to dive into this project in May 2022. She spent countless hours perfecting the fit with feedback from people at markets and events, to get the perfect fit for the regular-shaped feet. She created a small local team in Muizenberg, Cape Town that would create the Earth Soles to the highest quality, still using recycled leather. "I always get recy fabric which is sometimes challenging, as they come in different thicknesses and sizes, but it keeps me creative!" Production Process Production Process Our shoes are handmade, taking up to 2.5 hours to craft. Learn how our Earth Soles come to life! Selecting the leather We work with a wide variety of recycled leather colors. Once an order comes in, we collect the right colors and begin crafting the shoes! Leather work In the first phase, our team cuts, glues, and prepares the leather, attaching the loop and punching holes for stitching. This hands-on process takes about 1.5 hours—watch the behind-the-scenes video below. Stitching In the final step, each shoe is hand-stitched with high-quality waxed thread. We use a plier to make it friendlier for the fingers! It's a process that takes about an hour to complete. Packing & Shipping Before shipping, we pack each pair in non-plastic pagacking. We add a shoe bag made from recycled fabric, and our information cards—ready to travel the world! Charity To continue the circle of giving and receiving, we proudly donate $1 per pair sold to those incredible local organizations: U Turn Earth Sole’s founder, Anouk, volunteered with U-Turn for two years and knows they do very impactful work! U-Turn empowers Cape Town’s homeless with a 2-year program for skill development. and job readiness. Greenpop Greenpop restores forests and raises environmental awareness in Southern Africa. At their annual Reforest Festival, they’ve planted over 150,000 trees! We’ve attended and highly recommend it.

Use & Durability As we all walk and wear differently, we have some advice on how to have your Earth Soles last a long time.
