Our Story Our Story My name is Anouk Anansi, the proud founder of Earth Sole. Our story began in December 2020, when my friend Sarah handed me repurposed leather at a festival on a cold rainy day. I had recently watched the documentary Kiss The Ground , and found myself drawn to the concept of grounding . Holding the leather in my hand, I thought about how special it would be to create my own shoes, allowing me to stay in contact with the healthy energy of Mother Nature through its soles. Throughout the following year, I continued being surprised by the interest my shoes got when I wore them myself. Despite having no experience in either leather or shoe making, and knowing the many benefits of the shoes, the idea of making them for others was too overwhelming. But then, when the second pair I made for my partner had gained so much interest at a festival I thought, wow. Something is in there, and people need this footwear! Another 6 months later, I participated in a 10-day meditation retreat and I gained so much clarity and knew: I have to do this! Fast forward to May 2022, I moved back to Cape Town. I started the long journey of creating the perfect-fitting shoe. I did this by measuring many people's feet at parties and markets, and having them try the latest version of their size. I created a small team, with enthusiastic and creative ladies from the area that would work from home, creating the intriguing 2-hour production of the shoe in their own time and pace. Sustainability : Earth Sole prioritizes eco-friendly practices by using organic materials like leather and 100% repurposed leather for all our uppers and back parts. We make shoes to order, ensuring no excess stock. We also minimize waste by reducing offcuts, selling what we have, or saving them for future kids' collections. This does mean that we offer a slow-fashion product, as our handmade product takes about 2 hours to be made. All our tops and backs are crafted from scrap leather even our shoe bags are made from reclaimed fabric the upholstery industry had no longer use for. But it's not just about the environment; it's about people too. We take care of our staff, ensuring fair wages and a supportive work environment. And when it comes to shipping, we choose for paper envelopes over plastic envelopes. And we're not just a business; we believe in sharing our success. Besides running this brand, I also much enjoy video & photography, creating music and the outside life on the beach and in the sun. Zo ë Online Customer Support Hi there, I’m Zoë, and I have spent the last five years learning about connecting people with their natural selves by teaching yoga and studying human behaviour. Since November 2024 I have taken over Earth Sole South Africa, and am very excited to grow the brand under the new name Aard Footwear! Natasha Production - Phase 1 I've been working for Earth Sole since the beginning. My job is the cutting, gluing, and making the loops and holes. After many trial and error, I now proudly make my leather work. I enjoy working in the comfort of my home. Jade Stitcher - Phase 2 I'm Jade, and I started sowing shoes for Earth Sole in December 2023 and have been loving it ! While starting my journey as a young adolescent, I never thought I would have the opportunity to be part of such a powerful brand. Avril Seamstress Bags I'm Avril and started making bags for Earth Sole last year. I always get repurposed fabric which is sometimes challenging, as they come in different thicknesses and sizes, but it keeps me creative! Production Process Production Process Each Earth Sole is an authentic creation, carefully handcrafted. Whether it's a Regular Fit or a Custom Fit, the process begins in our small studio. Here, we thoughtfully combine our wide range of repurposed leather in various colors with your preferred choice of wax and rivet. The journey continues with Nadia, who visits the studio weekly, breathing life into these creations. Prepairing your order Our studio is a hub of activity as we pack orders, often working with 15 to 30 different colors. We maximize every scrap, and combine even the smallest pieces to create shoes for shops and orders. Phase 1 Once the leather arrives at our skilled craftswomen's homes, they cut it according to custom or regular patterns. They glue the pieces together and create holes for stitching. The time spent varies based on the shoe's size and complexity, ranging from 1 to 1.5 hours. Phase 2 Phase 2 involves stitching the shoes using waxed thread. We use pliers to ease the process and ensure precision. This process takes about 1 hour. Packing & Shipping Before they embark on their journey, we pack them with your shoe bag (also made with repurposed fabric), ready to be shipped worldwide. Charity Giving Back Your support means the world to us! To continue the circle of giving and receiving, we share 1% with those incredible South African NGOs: U-Turn Anouk, the founder of Earth Sole, has spent two years volunteering with this NGO and knows its heart is in the right place. Measurements Guidelines Our regular fit is designed for medium-width feet with rounded toes. If you’re unsure whether it’s the right fit for you, follow the measurement guidelines below. Share your measurements with us, and we’ll help you choose between our regular fit or a custom-made Earth Sole. Step 2: Check your measurements - Did you measure the 4 horizontal lines over the top of your feet? - Are the horizontal lines 4 cm apart from each other? - Are the pictures of your measurements taken from straight above? - Are the measurements in centimeters? Step 3: Send your measurements Good work! Click here to send us your measurements , and we will advise you on your shoe size, or go ahead and create your custom pair. Only once we have received your complete measurements we can start creating your tailor-made Earth Sole. This creation time takes 1 - 3 weeks. Measure your feet: Y ou will need: - Two blank papers - Pen or pencil - Tape measure - Have a look at the image below for visual guidance Draw 5 horizontal lines, each 4 cm below the other Place your pen at the top line as in the image. Let your right foot touch your pen slightly, and trace your foot with the pen held upright . Avoid pushing too hard against your foot. Measure your bridge Measure over the top of your foot at the 4 horizontal lines, not keeping the tape measure too tight or too loose around your feet. Note your measurements in centimeters. Measure your foot length Measure in a straight vertical line from top to bottom. So, not from the toe to the bottom as this is vertical. Repeat for the other left foot. Take photos. Use & Durability As we all walk and wear differently, we have some advice on how to have your Earth Soles last a long time. F A Q Our Products W hich products do we offer? At this point, we only sell our first design of Earth Soles. They come in 3 options of which the first are our own designs. The second option is Design Your Own, which allows you to fully create your own Earth Sole. The previous two will fit about 80% of the people. Those who often struggle to find well-fitting footwear, can go for our third option which is the Full Custom. Can you customize your Earth Sole? Absolutely! We offer customization options for those who want a unique touch to their footwear. You can choose leather, wax, and rivet colors, as well as add artistic designs or opt for exotic materials like ostrich leather. Find here all our Custom Color options. Why are our Earth Soles so unique? Our footwear is different because they're made from recycled leather, which allows us to always have a rotation of various colors of leather. Each pair is unique and can be fully customized too! They are flexible, breathable, and offer a true barefoot experience. Which colors do our shoes come in? As we work with repurposed leather, we always have a wide variety of leather colors. Heading to Our Collection will show you all the shoes we have designed for you. When you go to our Design Your Own page, you can find all our leather colors available. How durable are they? Leather has proven to be very durable - the bushman and Aboriginals used to wear nothing else then leather for their shoes back in the day! When only wearing our shoes indoors, they can last a lifetime. When wearing them outdoors (which is where they are originally made for), limit walking them on wet pavements, as this increases the stretch of the weather and expedites wear and tear. Also, when you are d ragging your feet across the pavement while walking they will walk through much faster. Can you wear them outside? You can absolutely wear them outside. Just be aware when you wear them when the surface outside is wet, the pavements work like sandpaper for the leather sole, and you will wear through the sole faster. Also, the leather will stretch faster which will make them go out of shape. When this is the case, you can simply through them in the washing machine at 60 degrees and dry them naturally and not in direct sunlight. They will go back to their original shape. Our Prices How do we get to our pricing? We understand that our pricing may seem high for a seemingly simple product. However, there are several factors to consider. Each shoe size is individually crafted to ensure a perfect fit since there are no standard foot models for barefoot shoes. This process took about a year and is an ongoing effort to achieve perfection. We've also had many trials and experiments to limit shoes and high durability, to result in the highest quality product possible. Additionally, the manual production of each pair takes approximately 2 hours, significantly more than factory-made shoes. Also, we share a small part of our profit with two local NGOs. More about this on our About page . Fitting How do they stretch? Earth Soles can stretch about 10%, and they'll adapt to your feet over time. Wear them, let them mold to your foot shape, and enjoy that perfect fit as they become uniquely yours. Be aware that they will stretch faster when they are wet. To ensure the perfect fit from the start, head to our Size and Fit Guide . When your shoes have stretched, you can either wash them and dry them naturally, they will turn back to their original shape. Also, we can advise our sheepskin insole , to fill up your shoe in comfort. Can you fit one of Earth Soles standard fit? Our readymade Earth Soles fit best for those with regular-shaped feet. Head to our Sizing Guide for more information. If your feet are exceptionally slim, wide, or have unique dimensions, consider our Custom Custom option. How are our Earth Soles meant to fit? Our shoes are designed to snugly embrace your feet, providing a second-skin feel. Initially, they may feel slightly tight. Wear them indoors for a day or two; they will mold comfortably to your feet. Once they fit comfortably, avoid getting them wet to prevent further stretching. If the shoes feel too tight and painful, please contact us without further scratching the soles. Our leather What does repurposed/recycled leather mean? It's leftover leather from old products like furniture and shoes, which we recycle and use for the tops and back parts of our shoes. At Earth Sole, we prioritize sustainability by using repurposed leather and minimizing waste. Our eco-friendly practices reduce the environmental impact of our footwear, and we are committed to continuing our efforts toward a greener future. We get our leather from different suppliers, that have no longer use for this leather and offer us their offcuts or reject leather. For instance, most of our cow leather we get from Moorgas & Sons, an upholstery factory here in Cape Town. Another place we get our leather from is FSP, which creates high-quality handbags for our local airport. Grounding & Health C an those with a history of foot injuries wear Earth Sole? If you've had foot issues in the past, you can still ease into our Earth Soles - compare it with being barefoot. Just take it slow, especially if you've been using corrective sh oes. Get in touch if you would like some more guidance. How do Earth Soles keep you grounded ? Earth Soles promotes ground ing by using a thin (1.4 - 2 mm) piece of leather for the sole. Unlike rubber soles that block the earth's energy, leather allows energy to pass through. Why is grounding/earthing good for us? Grounding or earthing connects us to the Earth's biomagnetic field, reducing stress, inflammation, pain, improving sleep, and supporting the nervous system. Earth Sole is unique because it's designed to provide a grounding connection with the earth. Made from repurposed leather, our shoes are not only comfortable but also eco-friendly. Also, we work by hand and are one of the only brands out there using just leather for the sole. What if you're not used to walking barefoot? We do not provide rubber outer soles, as our shoes are designed to keep you grounded, and rubber soles hinder grounding conduction. If you desire additional support, we offer sheepskin inners . They provide warmth while still keeping you grounded, making them a great choice for those new to barefoot walking. How do Earth Soles manage water? It is best to keep your shoes as dry as possible, as they will stretch less fast. Also, when they are wet and you walk on asphalt, asphalt will turn into sandpaper for your leather soles, which decreases durability. If they do get wet, just let them air dry and out of direct sun. Can you wear Earth Soles when you have bunions? Yes, we could say they would work really well, as our shoes mold around the shape of your feet. It is recommended to measure your feet and send them to us, so we can advise y ou on whether to opt for our Regular or Custom Fit. Are Earth Soles suitable for outdoor ac tivities? Yes, Earth Sole shoes are designed for various outdoor activities. They are lightweight, flexible, and provide a comfortable barefoot experience. However, they may not be ideal for extremely rugged or wet terrains. How should you care for your Earth Sole shoes? For regular maintenance, you can simply wipe your Earth Sole shoes with a damp cloth to remove dirt and stains. If they need a deeper clean, they are machine washable up to 40 degrees. Allow them to air dry naturally, avoiding direct sunlight. Also Beeswax would work well to add to the sole, to keep your leather nice and moisturized. Do we also make shoes for kids? - We are ve ry willing to also start with Earth Sole Mini, but have unfortunately not had the capacity to perfectionize the patterns for the small ones.
